Inaugurated on Tuesday October 8, Thierry Falisse’s exhibition is a winding road between his spirit, his identities, his past and his art. But you have to know how to find the very personal keys to his works. His artistic journey is based on the story of his father, André.

This exhibition of around fifty pieces is a first major retrospective of the work of Thierry Falisse. Paintings, sculptures and even photos, his works are the echo of a past which is not his, but which has radically marked his art. Because the extravagant journey announced is that of his father, André, a Franco-Belgian who found love in Korea.

Departure for Korea

Thierry Falisse, already a recognized painter, decided one day that the old family photo albums recounting his father’s journey to Korea in the 1950s, his involvement in humanitarian work there, his meeting with his mother, were no longer enough. They had to open up to something bigger than just personal history. They were to become material for his work.

Thierry Falisse then left for Korea on an artistic journey. Also to confront these blood ties that are so distant. The clash of tradition and modernity and the difficulty of communicating with this family at the end of the world will become the compass of his production. Creating rather less colorful, more figurative paintings, Thierry Falisse will force himself to let go and imagine more shimmering and conceptual works. “It radically changed my work,” he explains. “There was a first painting with ghosts. I did it in sweat, almost in violence. And it opened a path to something else.”

Ambassadors of the House

When Thierry Palisse works, “there are sometimes outbursts. But it is done more in tension, in research. Then control remains a part of my identity. » A rich and complex identity to discover at the Jean-Montchougny gallery.
