For the second time in less than a month, Lindenwood’s Men’s Soccer team dropped a game to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville by a score of 2-0.
The last time the two teams matched up, on Sept. 28 in Edwardsville, the Cougars won by the same score. However, unlike the last game in which the first score was notched within the first minute, this match was tied at zero for much longer.
Both Cougar goals came in the final 10 minutes of the game and were scored by the same player. As the clock approached it was the 81st minute. Nacho Abeal scored on a penalty kick past Lions goalie Enzo Gil, Abeal’s third goal of the season. Eight minutes later, Abeal would score his fourth goal of the season, with an assist from Stephan Moreira, to make the score 2-0.
Despite the loss, Gil saved six shots throughout the full 90 minutes of play. The Lions were able to put five shots on goal themselves in the match as well, done so by five different players. Jermaine Mentoor, Salomon Oniangue, Jordan Matthews, Parker Smith, and Christos Phillipou were all credited with a mark in that particular department.
