The Nikkei index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose Thursday, May 16 in the morning in the wake of Wall Street, where the indices broke records the day before after the publication of a slowdown in inflation in the United States, raising hopes of declines Fed rate. The flagship index of the Japanese capital gained 0.65% to 38,636.63 points around 00:45 GMT, while the broader Topix index lost 0.16% to 2,726.53 points.

Inflation slowed in April in the United States for the first time since January, to 3.4% over one year compared to 3.5% in March, according to the CPI index published on Wednesday, news which has restored confidence in future rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and lowers bond yields. This news also caused the dollar to fall, particularly against the yen, a negative exchange rate movement for Japanese exporting groups.

The Japanese economy also contracted by 0.5% in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter, suffering the effects of a vast scandal in the local automobile industry and sluggish private consumption.

The dollar in decline

The dollar fell to 153.94 yen around 00:45 GMT, compared to 154.88 yen on Wednesday at 21:00 GMT. The euro was also down to 167.67 yen against 168.58 yen the day before, and relatively stable against the greenback, at 1.0892 dollars against 1.0884 dollars on Wednesday.

Oil prices increased: around 00:40 GMT the barrel of American WTI gained 0.59% to 79.09 dollars and the barrel of Brent from the North Sea rose 0.53% to 83.19 dollars.
