Florida leads best-of-7 series 3-1

SUNRISE, Fla. – The Florida Panthers can advance to the Eastern Conference Final for the second straight season if they defeat the Boston Bruins in Game 5 of their second-round series. Eastern Conference at Amerant Bank Arena on Tuesday.

The Panthers have won three straight games to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series, but they expect the Bruins to step up their game to avoid elimination.

“I don’t think there’s much that will change,” said Panthers forward Carter Verhaeghe. They’re obviously going to give their best effort, and we just have to continue to do what we’ve been doing since the beginning of the series, which is play the right way. »

The roles are reversed from last season, when the Bruins took a 3-1 lead over the Panthers in the first round before seeing the Panthers post three straight victories to clinch the series. The Bruins also took a 3-1 lead in their first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, but needed a 2-1 overtime win in Game 7 to advance to the second round.

“We put ourselves in this position, down 3-1,” noted Bruins defenseman Andrew Peeke. We just have to take it one game at a time, one day at a time. That’s what we’re focusing on. You all saw the last series, when Toronto was able to come back from us, as well as last year’s series between Florida and Boston.

“For us, it’s make or break, so we have to jump on the ice with that mentality and take advantage of it. »

The Bruins will be without captain Brad Marchand for a second straight game due to an upper-body injury suffered in a collision with Panthers center Sam Bennett in Game 3. He put on the skates during the last two days, and there appears to be a chance to see him back in uniform for Game 6 if Boston manages to extend the series.

“We’re focusing on our structure, our execution, and getting ready for Game 5,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. However, giving (Marchand) another chance to return to the game actually gives us extra motivation. »
