Before becoming an emblematic figure of French cinema, Guillaume Canet was a rider, and it was a horse riding accident at the age of 17 that marked a decisive turning point in his life. Guest on the show dna of the INA, the director of Little Handkerchiefs returned to this significant episode of his youth, reacting to the images of his fall which had been filmed. The young Canet was then a passionate and promising rider. “It was a pretty violent fall”remembered the one who has shared his life with Marion Cotillard since 2007. “I was hit by crampons, on my hand, in my back. I broke my whole right side in fact. Because I get caught… The horse steps on me afterwards.”

This dramatic accident took place during a competition in Mesquer in 1990. Guillaume Canet had just finished in second place in a night event in La Baule the previous weekend, which had been a Source of great pride for him. However, the next competition did not go as planned. “I ask for an improbable stride from the horse, who takes a stride forward, and who does not have the possibility of passing the obstacle and who pedals into it, I fall and he steps on me”confided the father of two children, not without emotion.

The description of his injuries is impressive: fractured wrist, dislocated shoulder, broken ribs and foot, not to mention the holes in his back caused by the horse’s crampons. This accident was not only physically traumatic, but it also ended his riding career. “I started riding again for a year, with a cast”he shared with a smile on his face. “And then I stopped”added Diane Kruger’s ex, explaining that the appeal of cinema turned out to be stronger: “I was 17, 18 years old, and I climbed all the time, every weekend, I traveled 400 kilometers to go and drop a bar sometimes, and there it was a moment in my life where I wanted to to make cinema, to go to Paris, to experience a life other than that in fact”he explained.
