At CAA-Quebec, we know the song: summer drags on, fall passes as quickly as a snap of the fingers, then the winter cold sets in for the season. This is why the organization reminds motorists to contact their mechanic now to make an appointment to have their winter tires installed.

Does the future really belong to those who get up early? When it comes to tires, absolutely! Making your appointment in advance not only avoids the rush in the workshops when the first snow appears, but also additional costs. In fact, motorists whose vehicle is still not equipped with winter tires on December 1st face a fine of $200 to $300 (plus costs), and put their safety and that of others at risk.

That’s not all: motorists who book in advance have access to more stocks, which allows them to compare prices and take advantage of promotional offers from garages. But above all, they have the luxury of choosing a winter tire that suits their needs.

“No need to have the tires installed right away, but you should at least make an appointment! Everyone wins: motorists for choosing a good product, and workshops for planning their workforce,” points out Pierre-Serge Labbé, vice-president of mobility services for the organization.

Many myths exist around the installation of winter tires. The perfect time to change tires is when the mercury hovers around 7 degrees Celsius for several consecutive days; It is wrong to believe that installing them early in the fall will damage them. In fact, you have to drive several hundred kilometers at high temperatures to cause premature wear.
