“At this stage of the investigation, the investigating judge does not wish to communicate on the characterization of this charge,” the prosecution clarified late Friday afternoon.

The driver suspected of having caused a double fatal accident in Barry (Tournai) will appear next Tuesday before the Tournai council chamber, which will have to overturn or confirm for one month his arrest warrant and his incarceration in preventive detention.

No other official information was communicated to the press on Friday concerning this accident which cost the lives of two young French people aged 19 and 23.

The accident occurred on Thursday, around 1:30 a.m., along the Chaussée de Bruxelles in Barry (Tournai), between the Festu bridge and the former Zoo nightclub. During this collision, seven people, including the two victims, were in the two cars involved in the collision.

“An Audi car hit a Peugeot in which the two deceased victims were located, born in 2000 and 2005. Both are of French nationality. The suspect driver, who is domiciled in the Tournai region, was born in 1993,” specified late Thursday morning Vincent Macq, king’s prosecutor for the judicial district of Tournai-Mons.

A forensic doctor and an automobile expert, appointed by the prosecution, went to the scene. According to statements made by the prosecution on Thursday, the suspect, who was under the influence of drink, appeared to be driving at a very high speed.
