Because of a bad choice, Andriy Lunin felt somewhat guilty about the serious injury to Dani Carvajal’s right knee on Saturday during the La Liga match against Villarreal (2-0 victory). The Ukrainian goalkeeper also suffered reprimands from three of his teammates.
This is the big problem of the weekend in the ranks of Real Madrid. Dani Carvajal, taken out on a stretcher on Saturday during the La Liga match against Villarreal (2-0 victory), suffers from a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and two other serious injuries requiring an operation. The 32-year-old full-back left in tears in added time of the La Liga match against Villarreal after a clash with his teammate Yeremy Pino (96th).
As shown in a sequence broadcast on social networks, Andriy Lunin appeared marked following this injury. While the Madrid vice-captain receives first aid on the pitch, the Ukrainian goalkeeper makes a sign of annoyance before putting his hands on his knees.
Reprimanded by Rüdiger, Valverde and Rodrygo
If Lunin blames himself, it’s because he regrets not having cleared the ball far in front in the sequence which led to Carvajal’s injury. A few seconds before the shock suffered by the Madrid defender, Lunin decided to throw it back short, even though Carvajal himself had signaled him to clear the ball.
Once Carvajal is on the ground, Antonio Rüdiger, Federico Valverde and Rodrygo make the same reproach to Lunin, mimicking the gesture of a long clearance.
Dani Carvajal will be operated on in the coming days, with no estimate of the duration of his absence, even if the Spanish player confirmed on his Instagram account that he will have to stay “several months” away from the field. “I’m already looking forward to starting my recovery and coming back like a beast. Thank you very much for your messages,” Carvajal also wrote in his publications. In the process, Real announced the extension of his contract until June 2026, showing him “all its support and affection”
