A serious road accident took place last night in Barry near Tournai on the Chaussée de Mons, not far from the Zooclub nightclub. The mayor informed us this morning that two people lost their lives in this accident.
“It was an accident between two vehicles. One came from Leuze, which apparently was driving very fast and collided head-on with another vehicle in the other direction. Two people died, from the second vehicle“, explains Paul-Olivier Delannois.
The Picardy Wallonia emergency services were alerted on Thursday, around 1:30 a.m., that an accident involving two vehicles had occurred along the Chaussée de Bruxelles in Barry (Tournai). An extrication vehicle, a marking truck, four ambulances and two Smurs were dispatched to the scene.
“An Audi hit a Peugeot in which were the two deceased victims born in 2000 and 2005 and of French nationality“, confirms Vincent Macq, King’s Prosecutor of Mons-Tournai.
The collision occurred between the Festu bridge and the former Zoo nightclub. During a maneuver, a car was hit by another vehicle. In total, seven people were seated in these two cars. “We had to extricate one of the two occupants in one of the two cars. In the extricated car, two people died. It is a man and a woman“, said around 8:30 a.m. Captain Lionel Hanuise who led the intervention.
“The cause of the accident is apparently the speed on this axis. The lighting worked. This kind of drama never leaves me indifferent. It’s a real disaster“, comments Paul-Olivier Delannois.
Vincent Macq’s explanations go in the same direction: “The suspect who resides in the Tournai region was born in 1993, the pathologist and the automobile expert went to the scene, the suspect seemed to be driving at a very high speed and to be under the influence of drink“The automobile expert must confirm that the driver was driving at excessive speed.”He was made available to an investigating judge who will decide his fate within 48 hours of his deprivation of liberty.“, concludes the King’s prosecutor.
