The traditional plant market in the village of Bergères (Aube) will have a political flavor this year. One month before the European elections, the president of the National Rally group in the National Assembly came to visit him this Thursday, May 9. But his arrival is not unanimous.

It was to applause that Marine Le Pen was welcomed around 11 a.m. at the Bergères plant market (Aube) this Thursday, May 9. Despite a large security presence made up of gendarmes and bodyguards, a crowd gathered around the leader of the RN, offering her bouquets of flowers, champagne and taking photos with her.

Marine Le Pen spoke with some exhibitors on the theme of agriculture, on “the false promises made by the government, the contradiction between what is announced and what is really on the table to help our farmers.”

The president of the National Rally group at the National Assembly had a word for visitors to the market “I came to tell rural French people that they are not far from our concerns, quite the contrary”

In the middle of the campaign for the European elections, visitors are not fooled”she came to seek votes” blurted out one of them, who was surprised to see her here but who didn’t see any problem with it.

Ascension Thursday is almost the most important day in the small village of Bergères. Its population goes from 120 inhabitants to 10,000 for one day: Plant Day. Nurseries, horticulturists, producers… more than 160 exhibitors are expected this Thursday, May 9.

A political visit which does not please the mayor of the city, Florence Petit (without label): “Our party is an apolitical, family, warm party. We don’t want to mix it up with politics.”

It was the RN deputy for the 1st constituency of Aube, Jordan Guitton, who announced the arrival of Marine Le Pen a few days earlier. He justifies the choice of the village of Bergères: “We go as close as possible to the French, where other politicians never go“.

In the second round of the presidential election, Marine Le Pen narrowly came out on top in the village. She had collected 37 votes against 36 votes for Emmanuel Macron.

This surprise visit is not without consequences: certain exhibitors canceled their presence at the event following the announcement of the arrival of Marine Le Pen. As well as a few visitors who expressed their dissatisfaction to the Mayor.

The residents interviewed say they are disappointed with the political turn their event is taking but put things into perspective.“It could perhaps attract new customers.” Patrick, a resident of the village, tells us.

This visit still has a price: an additional €2,000 had to be paid for security. The sub-prefect allegedly demanded that the bags be searched at the entrance, according to an organizer.
