May 9, 2024: a day to celebrate Europe and call for mobilization for the European elections

This date, which marks the anniversary of Schumann’s declaration in 1950, considered the founding act of the European Union, takes on its full meaning this year a few weeks before the European elections in June 2024.

It is an opportunity to recall the role of the European Parliament and the challenges of these elections.

The European Parliament is one of the essential institutions of the European Union. Through legislative acts adopted alongside the Council of the European Union, MEPs represent and defend the interests of European citizens.

At the end of these elections, the main orientations and priorities of the European Union will be redefined for 5 years and the European Commission will be renewed, the choice of European commissioners being subject to the approval of MEPs.

More than ever, the European elections of June 8 and 9, 2024 will be decisive in defending democracy and responding to the global challenges we face.

It is not only a choice of representatives that is at stake, but the very future of Europe and this vote is a duty for the social, united, democratic and sustainable Europe that we want.

In recent years, through the proposals of the European trade union movement, social Europe has progressed despite the votes of far-right MEPs systematically against directives favorable to workers.

But nothing is certain and the UNSA is mobilizing, alongside the European Trade Union Confederation, to promote loud and clear the values of democracy and social progress.

The UNSA makes proposals for the upcoming mandate, through a Manifesto which reaffirms the choice of a strong social Europe responding to the challenges of our time, and:

  • which fights against wealth and income inequalities
  • which protects and extends workers’ rights
  • that guarantees just transitions for current and future generations
  • which protects against anti-democratic excesses

Together, let’s shape the Europe of tomorrow. On June 8 and 9, every voice counts. Make yours heard.
