an astonishing and immersive New Kingdom

Wes Ball’s Planet of the Apes New Kingdom relaunches the saga with an inflated and completely new approach. We take.

For the tenth film in the longest saga in cinema history, Disney chose the rebootwith an approach as destabilizing as it is surprising: taking the title of The Planet of the Apes at the foot of the letter. No longer a human on the horizon (or almost), omnipresent nature has regained its rights and there are only monkeys in this New Kingdom in which we immerse ourselves Wes Ball, almost no dialogue for almost an hour. Monkeys killing each other in a sort of ape western (still in motion capture), hyperrealistic and technically very impressive.

Animal fable immersed in nature

Because the apes kill each other in the shadow of the memory of the most intelligent of them, Caesar, tutelary figure of the saga, only to be attached to his name by a usurper named Proximus. But the most beautiful and most disconcerting thing about this new approach to the saga is to dare to permanently adopt the point of view of the monkeys, in a form of animal fable permanently animated by the presence of nature (magnificent sequences by the sea)… Even if it means daring a particularly surprising false contemplative rhythm within a blockbuster (Disney!).

A new approach that relaunches the saga

Planet of the Apes New Kingdom will not become less political for all that, with the arrival of a young girl rescued from a world from which humans have disappeared (Freya Allan), whose role is murkier than it seems… The sequence of the bird bridge is quite extraordinary, like the final break in the dike, and testifies to the originality of this New Kingdom which never forgets the spectacular sequences – even without men – and magnificently relaunches the saga.

Written by Josh Friedman (to whom we owe Avatar Or War of the Worldsone of the best Spielberg), this blockbuster of a new genre leaves the historical dimension to its vestige to create a fable of immersive political anticipation in which the monkeys become the sole driving force of the action. Until the next episode… Because according to the last scenes of Planet of the Apes New Kingdom, a new trilogy is announced. So much the better.

Planet of the Apes New Kingdom by Wes Ball (EU, 2h25) with Owen Teague (Noa, the main character), Kevin Durand (Proximus César), Freya Allan, William H. Macy… Released May 8.
