The prefecture of Mayotte announced, this Wednesday, May 8, the first death linked to the cholera epidemic which has been raging since mid-March. This is a three-year-old child.

A three-year-old child died after contracting cholera, as the Mayotte prefecture announced this Wednesday, May 8. This is the first death since the start of this epidemic which began in mid-March in this department, and which infected several dozen people.

“A first child died today,” write the prefecture of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) in a joint press release. “The child lived in the Koungou district where several cases of cholera had been identified in recent weeks.”

The prefecture indicates that “the intervention teams went to the site to treat those close to the child”, while 58 cases of cholera have already been confirmed, a total multiplied by 4 in a little more than ‘one week according to a count from La 1ère based on ARS data.

It is in this context that the Minister of Health, Frédéric Valletoux, is expected on site Thursday May 9 and Friday May 10.
