1 – 1

No one really satisfied, no one really disappointed. In an exciting match at the cutting edge, Union and Club Brugge divided the points. In an exuberant Jan Breydel Stadium, the visitors took the lead through revelation Franjo Ivanovic, but Brandon Mechele scored a deserved point for Club in the end.

  1. key moment

Just before the half hour mark, Michal Skoras is presented with the 1-0 on a tray, but Club’s Polish winger misses incomprehensibly in front of an open goal. “If that ball had gone in, we would have had a different game,” Hans Vanaken also realized.

  2. man of the match

With two crucial saves in the final minutes, Simon Mignolet once again proved his invaluable value to Club Brugge at the age of 36.

  3. remarkable

15 out of 30: on paper, Club Brugge has just reached half the goal after ten match days, but in reality the national champion simply does not score enough this season.

The national champion against the vice-champion: Jan Breydel is preparing for a top match on Sunday at the cutting edge.

After the European victory against Sturm Graz, Club Brugge also wanted to win in their own country, while at Union they mainly hoped to put the major scoring problem behind them – which also haunted the people of Brussels in Europe.

Those ambitions did not translate into a pleasant viewing piece. Only after half an hour did Jan Breydel see his first real goal opportunity. Jashari presented Skoras – who had been preferred to the fickle Skov Olsen – with the 1-0 on a tray, but the Pole incomprehensibly missed in front of an open goal.

Club did demand the ball before half time, but their performance was mainly uninspired. While Union struggled to get close to Mignolet, Blue-Black was able to threaten a second time just before half time, but Moris stood firm on Vanaken’s volley.

Flits van Ivanovic

A hungry Club hoped to catch Union by the throat at the start of the second half, but it was Union that took the lead against the flow of play. Revelation Ivanovic brilliantly hacked away at the Bruges defense and finished calmly.

That flash of class from Union changed the game. Club was forced into the attack by a cautious Union, which could lie in wait for the counter from a very strong organization. Club looked for openings, but did not find them.

If it doesn’t work in football, then let’s do it at a standstill, Brandon Mechele must have thought. Ten minutes before the end he headed a corner kick from Jashari hard into the goal, Club was rewarded for his work.

Over and over, Jan Breydel hoped, but it was Union that actually came up with a final offensive. Mignolet saved the team twice, first on an attempt by Ivanovic, then on a shot by Terho.

Club and Union get what they deserve: a point each. Although they don’t gain much from this in the standings.

Reactions after Club Brugge-Union:

Simon Mignolet (Club Brugge): “Of course you want to win when you play at home. But if you look at the match in context, this is a point won. In the first half we missed a big chance to make it 1-0 and in the second half we conceded an early goal. We played against a very tough block, luckily we still scored on a standing phase. That’s my job. I’m glad I was able to grab those balls to help the group continue working. Whether the total points are too few? As a Club, yes.”

Noah Sadiki (Union): “I think it is a fair draw. Club was more dominant in the first half, but after the break we also created chances. The idea was not to play here in a waiting game, but you know that things can be difficult here. We were in a good position, except for that last corner kick. There is plenty of quality in this team, but we are still growing.

Points shared with Jan Breydel

After an intense second half, both teams went home with a point. Union chose its moments in the second half and took the lead through Ivanovic. Club only came alongside ten minutes before the end thanks to Mechele, but blue and black were able to thank Mignolet twice in the end.

Terho advances again and tries with an opportunistic kick. Mignolet has to stretch completely to turn the ball. The goalkeeper saves the skin of his team again.

The Bruges public still lives on hope, but on the field nerves rule. Will either team still have a chance? A division of points would not be unjustified given the game image.

An extra 5 minutes will be added.

Mignolet saves the furniture!

Rodriguez, with the help of Seys, puts Ivanovic alone in front of goal. The Croat has the winning goal at the foot, but this time he cannot get past Mignolet. The goalkeeper saves the furniture for Club!

With the end in sight, the match also starts to get more bitter. After Burgess and Jashari, Lazare has now also been booked.

The Bruges goal also shakes up Union’s match plan. The people of Brussels now have to get to work themselves again, are they speculating on a division of points?

Mechele brings Club alongside!

If it doesn’t work out playing football, then just play in a stationary phase. Jashari cuts his corner perfectly, Mechele heads straight into the goal. Jan Breydel explodes, can blue-black now also go on and over?

De Cuyper swings the ball wonderfully in front of goal, but Tzolis just can’t get to the ball enough to deflect it completely. It’s been forever since Club was able to get a full-fledged chance.

Union is also unable to achieve anything at all, although the people of Brussels are mainly focused on defending their lead.
