This morning, in Escautpont, in my constituency, with the mayor and the elected representatives of the municipal council, alongside veterans’ associations, we discovered with amazement swastikas and homophobic insults on the war memorial that they were preparing to inaugurate.

I share their anger and their emotion, like that of the population, in the face of this new stain.

In Mulhouse, it was neo-Nazis who tagged the posters of the list led by Léon Deffontaines with the inscriptions “death to the reds”.

Disgust and anger invade us.

These inscriptions, these calls for death are overwhelming testimony to the rise of the far-right and xenophobic, anti-Semitic and racist ideas, in France as in Europe.

I call, on this anniversary of the end of the Second World War, for the union of all Republicans attached to our fundamental values of liberty, equality and fraternity, to push back this wave of hatred and rejection of the other.

Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the PCF and deputy for the North,
