Is Zinedine Zidane the mystery torchbearer?

At 7:40 p.m. this Wednesday, Florent Manaudou will descend from Belem to transmit the Olympic flame to two torchbearers, whose identities are unknown. The name of Zinedine Zidane is circulating for the lighting of the cauldron.

What there is to know

This May 8, a large crowd gathers on the coast in Marseille to see the Belem with the Olympic flame on board, and the parade of ships that accompanies it. The three-masted ship entered the northern harbor at 11 a.m. and will sail along the shores of the Marseille city until 5 p.m.

  • The Olympic cauldron lit by Zidane?

His name has been mentioned for a long time and for good reason: Zinedine Zidane was born in Marseille, and grew up in the city of Castellane. He played in several local clubs, until his recruitment by AS Cannes in 1987. It was the newspaper l’Equipe which revived the rumor today, saying that the former footballer could light the Olympic cauldron. The name of the second torchbearer, after Florent Manaudou, also remains unknown.

  • The Olympic torch unveiled

The Olympic torch that swimmer Florent Manaudou will carry this evening, when he leaves Belem, has been unveiled. 11,000 carriers will take turns carrying it for more than two months, until the start of the Olympic Games.

  • The parade until 5 p.m.

On the Corniche and towards Estaque, the crowds to welcome Belem are more sparse. The ship will continue its procession all afternoon until 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., he will arrive at the Old Port.
