Around fifty people gathered on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. on Place du Luxembourg, in Brussels, to show their support for the Israeli hostages on October 7, a year after the unprecedented Hamas attack leaving 1,205 dead and 251 hostages.

Organized by the 7 October Belgium collective, the rally aimed to reiterate its support for “Israel in the face of Islamist terrorism.”October 7 is an important day, because it was on this day that Israel and the world woke up to images of horror that changed our world forever”declared the organizers. Fadila Maaroufi, director of the European Observatory of Fundamentalisms and co-founder of the October 7 collective, called on the Belgian government to do everything possible to fight against the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Belgium since the Hamas attack a year ago . “We ask our representatives to release funds to take structural action against anti-Semitism. We also demand that they ban Palestinian flags from our universities and sanction those that spread an anti-Semitic message or invite terrorists.”advanced Fadila Maaroufi.

The demonstrators demand, above all, the immediate release of the Israeli hostages. As of October 3, almost a year after the Hamas attack and the start of the war in the Palestinian territory, 97 people are still held captive there, including 64 presumed alive, 33 having been declared dead by the Israeli army. During the offensive carried out in response by Israel, at least 41,825 Palestinians were killed in Gaza, the majority civilians, according to data from the Hamas government’s Ministry of Health, deemed reliable by the UN.
