According to the chairman of the National Assembly’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee, George Kariuki, assessment of the destroyed infrastructure is underway, and repairs are expected to begin once the rains stop.

Furthermore, visiting the Mathare slum in Nairobi, President William Ruto promised emergency financial assistance to every household affected or displaced by the floods in the Kenyan capital.

“I will announce the construction of 20,000 houses that will help Nairobi residents living in informal settlements like this. This will allow every citizen to live in dignified neighborhoods with water, electricity and a clean environment, so that citizens stop living in houses like these that are constantly washed away by floods,” he said. Ruto said.

The Kenyan president also postponed the planned reopening of schools until further notice.

The flood toll in Kenya continues to rise due to persistent heavy rains. 228 people died and 72 people are still missing. More than 212,000 people have been displaced.
