Around 4:30 a.m., on the night of Tuesday May 7 to Wednesday May 8, an explosion took place near a residence for the elderly located in Puilboreau, near La Rochelle. The explosion left one seriously injured and two lightly injured. Around thirty people were evacuated.
The affected building located rue des Fleneaux, in the town of Puilboreau, is supplied with gas. It was heavily damaged by the violence of the explosion. Other neighboring buildings, including the Domitys seniors residence, also suffered extensive damage.
The explosion occurred on the third floor in a new apartment occupied by only one person. With the violence of the explosion, the individual found himself buried under the rubble. The firefighters on site had to first secure the building before finding her. Once out, a surgeon had to put the seriously injured person to sleep before amputating their leg. This victim, seriously injured, was transported to Poitiers University Hospital by helicopter.
The residents of the different residences were welcomed in the Puilboreau community hall. Significant resources were deployed by the Charente-Maritime firefighters to secure the scene: two fire vans and two ‘large-scale’ trucks.
