The 2024 Tour of Italy continues this Wednesday with a fifth stage, 178 kilometers long, between Genoa and Lucca. On paper, it’s a new massive sprint that awaits the runners.

Never two without three. After two stages dedicated to sprinters, the fast men in the peloton will have a new opportunity to win a prize in this Tour of Italy 2024, during a fifth stage between Genoa and Lucca, over a distance of 178 kilometers.

The route of the 5th stage

For this fifth stage of the Tour of Italy, the riders will mainly follow the Aurelia national road. The start will be given from Genoa, the capital of Liguria. There will be hills in the first part of the stage, which will allow a breakaway to form. The expected sprint will take place in Lucca, provincial capital of Tuscany. Be careful of a narrowing of the road 3 kilometers from the finish, which could cause damage.

The profile of the 5th stage

If the sprinters have already had the opportunity to express themselves over the last two days, they nevertheless had to grit their teeth to overcome a difficulty each time in the final. This time, in the last hundred kilometers, there will only be the short Montemagno (3km at 4.3%) to cross, the summit of which will be located more than 20 kilometers away. Nothing insurmountable, even for a runner like Fabio Jakobsen, who showed difficulties this Tuesday as soon as the road rose.

The favorites of the 5th stage

Winner this Tuesday, Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) will once again be one to watch with his cyclamen jersey, he who currently dominates the points classification. Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) also has a victory under his belt and is one of the main favorites. For his first Grand Tour, the Dutchman Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) wants to make it happen. The field of sprinters is rich with also Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious), on the podium this Tuesday.

Not successful during the first two sprints, Caleb Ewan (Jayco-AlUla) and Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich Post NL) will want to catch up.
