While the demolition of houses threatening ruin in the old medina of Casablanca continues, evacuated residents have called on the authorities to regularize their situation as quickly as possible, especially as winter is fast approaching. Many found themselves on the street after leaving their homes and cannot afford to pay rent.
“The decision to evacuate and demolish was quickly made. The promises we received, according to which our rent will be covered while we wait for our rehousing, have not been kept. After devoting our lives to building these houses, today we find ourselves on the streets,” we lamented.
Note that the rehousing program for residents of the old medina is part of “Mahaj Al Malaki”. This project aims to modernize this historic part of the city while preserving its architectural and cultural heritage. It includes the renovation of infrastructure, the demolition of houses threatening ruin, the creation of new urban spaces and the preservation of historical heritage.
