Castres-Stade Toulousain: “I realize that I forgot my cards…” The incredible anecdote from the derby referee

Stade Toulousain remembers it well. After being refereed last weekend by Tual Trainini, the man who directed the Top 14 semi-final between Toulouse and La Rochelle, the “red and black” are preparing to find Ludovic Cayre, the man at the whistle for the final between Stade Toulousain and UBB on June 28 at the Stade Vélodrome.

More recently, the man from Duras in Lot-et-Garonne was one of the three nominated for the title of best French referee for the 2023-2024 season. If the prize was finally awarded to Mathieu Raynal, Ludovic Cayre, who now has 19 years of refereeing, looked back on his very special season in the columns of Sud-Ouest.

He notably returned to this Top 14 final between Stade Toulousain and Union Bordeaux-Bègles, a confrontation which he defines as “the best (referee experience, Editor’s note) at the moment”. “Like the players who dream of touching the Brennus, our dream as a referee is to referee a Top 14 final. It was a magical moment in a unique place” he notably indicated.

The referee, who had already officiated a few months more at the Vélodrome for a Toulon-Toulouse, also delivered a notable anecdote from his career during a Montauban-Lyon in Pro D2. “In the middle of the second half, I give a warning to one of the two teams. We play the 60th minute and at that moment, I realize that I forgot my cards, the yellow and the red, in the pocket from my bag in the locker room… Fortunately I didn’t have to put any on” he quipped.
