“I have no vocation to intervene in the editorial of the media”, assures Rodolphe Saadé

Rodolphe Saadé, CEO of CMA CGM, the world’s third largest shipowner, was yesterday invited to the Elysée for the dinner given in honor of Xi Jinping. He will inaugurate a huge research and development center in Marseille on Wednesday, again in the presence of Emmanuel Macron. A center called Tangram.

Rodolphe Saadé is committed to achieving the objective of zero carbon emissions in 2050. However, his boats travel all over the world and consume a colossal amount of fuel. “It’s a real challenge but in view of the climate situation in the world it is important that a shipping company like ours takes the lead and tries to put in place an action plan that is certainly ambitious but feasible”he said.

15 billion dollars invested in “greening our fleet”

According to him, CMA CGM’s 600 ships consume 8 million tonnes of fuel each year. The fleet will be renewed in particular with ships powered by liquefied natural gas to reduce the group’s CO2 emissions by 20%, assures Rodolphe Saadé. “We also have ships powered by methanol on order, which allows us to reduce our CO2 emissions more significantly: around 60 to 70%”according to him. “We have invested more than $15 billion in greening our container ship fleet.”

“The shipping industry is cyclical”

The geopolitical situation and conflicts in the Red Sea have impacted maritime traffic and the journeys of CMA CGM vessels since mid-December 2023. “We are obliged to bypass the Suez Canal and pass through the Cape of Good Hope, so we extend the travel time by two weeks to reach Shanghai in the north of the Mediterranean“, he explains. “This increases prices,” he assures.

The billionaire has a turnover of $75 billion in 2022, $47 billion in 2023. The company’s profit has also fallen: from $25 billion in 2022 to $3.6 billion. The fourth quarter is even in the red. “The shipping industry is cyclical”explains Rodolphe Saadé.

The latter has just acquired Bolloré Logistic for 5 billion euros, the largest acquisition of this family group. “Logistics is complementary to maritime transport”he explains.

“I am not intended to intervene in media editorials”

Rodolphe Saadé also explains his decision to buy the BFMTV-RMC group. “We set up a press center*, we needed complementarities, with an audiovisual center”*, he assures. “I don’t look at it as an influence,” according to him. The latter had already bought La Provence, Corsica morning, taken 10% of the capital of M6, 15% of Brut.

“I have no vocation to intervene in the editorial of the media“, says Rodolphe Saadé, owner of La Provence and in the process of acquiring BFMTV-RMC. “I try to develop them, to give them financial means for that”he believes.

It ensures that it is not in competition with the Bolloré group but on the contrary is complementary. “I am in the nuance” he assures.
