Fire brought under control at the Intercontinental in Moorea

The roof of a building at the Intercontinental in Moorea went up in flames this Tuesday morning. The fire, believed to have been caused by a green waste fire, was brought under control after three hours by firefighters from Haapiti and Pao Pao. He caused no casualties.

The information was revealed by Tahiti infos. At 11:50 a.m. today the Pao Pao firefighters received a call to intervene on the site of the Intercontinental Moorea Resort & Spa. A fire, probably started from a pile of leaves burned during gardening work according to firefighters, spread to the roof of one of the buildings of the hotel complex. A van from Haapiti and another from Pao Pao were engaged. Around ten firefighters intervened. It took them nearly three hours to bring the flames under control. No casualties were reported, none of the surrounding bungalows were affected.

The hotel, owned by the Pacific Beachcomber group, was closed in the first months of the Covid crisis, in 2020. The furniture as well as various items found new buyers during a flash sale in June 2020 but the complex itself , was not put on sale. This fire is reminiscent of the fire which broke out on December 13 in the grounds of the ex-Méridien in Tahiti, bought by SCP Moana Nui (Buhagiar group) and now awaiting renovations. . The flames had ravaged an annex, probably due to fraudulent use of the kitchen.

Tahiti Infos also reported the fire this morning of a house in the Vaite district of Papeari. Here again, the fire, quickly extinguished by the Teva i Uta firefighters, caused no casualties. The house went up in smoke.
