At least 14 people were killed in central Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) as heavy rain triggered flash floods in Jablanica municipality overnight from Thursday to Friday, Herzegovina canton officials confirmed -Neretva.
Darko Juka, head of the public relations department of the Herzegovina-Neretva canton government, said emergency services were doing everything possible to rescue victims and transport people to nearby medical centers.
The most critical situation is in Donja Jablanica, a village which remains completely cut off from the world due to the collapse of the roads. Rescue teams use boats provided by the armed forces and other emergency services.
Severe flooding also disrupted roads, isolating several municipalities. Miroslav Jakic, director of the Central Bosnia Canton Civil Protection Administration, confirmed that all rivers and streams in the region had overflowed and that civil protection teams were on their way to the affected areas.
The Minister of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zukan Helez, deployed the armed forces to participate in rescue operations and protect civilians. The Security Ministry confirmed that additional assistance, including helicopters, had been requested for the affected areas.
