It is pride which we do not talk about on a daily basis, but which people don’t forget. Patrice Lhôtellierfencing master at Melun Val de Seine fencing circlehas been o medalistr to 2000 Olympicshas Sydney. He immerses himself in his memories and talks about this moment, but also how he perceives it today.

Pressure on the shoulders

In 2000, he had planned to stopbut what finish in style ! From the start, the Games have been a goal that resonated with him, as he explains: “There have always been medalists in the club, I was immersed in it. Daniel Revenu and Bernard Talvard for example. It was a dream, but also an objective ! »

A necessary step that he managed to achieve four times : Los Angeles, Seoul or even Barcelona and Sydney. ” It is an honor, because competing in the Games is not for every athlete. France is a country of fencing and I knew that participating, it wasn’t enough “, he confides.

A Source of pressure which sometimes even revealed itself tougher than physical fatigue. The foilist adds: “Before 2000, it was a real psychological test. In 1988 and 1992 I was not good. I didn’t go to Atlanta in 1996 because of an injury… In 2000, France was the big favorite. There is an issue. ” At the moment, no other result is possible for Patrice Lhôtellier, apart from the gold medal.

The joy and atmosphere of the Games

In Sydney, despite this pressure, the one who is today fencing master does not break down. “Unlike other games, it was fun! I was able to enjoy it, because I knew what to expect. I was able to shoot without pressure,” he smiles.

But facing China, it was not easy in terms of emotions for Patrice Lhôtellier. “During the final, you feel like you’re going through every state. We lead with a head start, then we are caught up. We think we win then we think we lose. »

The score is 44-44, whoever wins the throw is the one who will be crowned Olympic champion. Jean-Noël Ferrari is on the track and after a false first joy, it is confirmation, he touches the Chinese. “It happens in a fraction of a second. And all of a sudden, we feel an indescribable joy. »

Today, he is not nostalgic for this moment. Always down to earth, he continues to teach and pass on his passion, also keeping in touch with his co-medalists.

Although he no longer participates in the Olympic Games as an athlete, he still keeps an eye on the competition and local athletes: “I intend to be present for those in 2024. I am a fan of the Games and I am very happy that the France be the host. Sydney is often described as having an exceptional vibe. In a world that doesn’t always go smoothly, I hope that the atmosphere will be as good in Paris. »
