The garbage collectors’ strike continues in Marseille, as the Olympic flame arrives

Started a week ago in two districts of the city, the Marseille garbage collectors’ strike now extends to almost all sectors of the city (only the 1st and 7th arrondissements are not affected). And it could continue next Wednesday and Thursday, when the Olympic flame arrives in the Marseille city, in front of nearly 150,000 spectators.

The metropolis asked the Prefect to requisition the collection agents

On April 9, the CGT filed an indefinite strike notice with the Aix-Marseille Metropolis, in charge of garbage collection. The agents denounced poor working conditions, sometimes unsanitary premises, and even salary inequalities. “Agents treated worse than the trash they collect”, declared Véronique Dolot, member of the CGT, cited by France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The waste collection agents confided that they had been received after a week by management, who allegedly did nothing.

On Sunday, in a press release, the metropolis announced that it had asked the Prefect to requisition the collection agents. She says she shown listening (from the strikers) and reached out to them on multiple occasions to find the path to dialogue and the return to work. In vain. (…) The Metropolis therefore requested the support of the police to put an end to possible illegal practices linked to this strike movement: blockades on public roads and disturbances to public order. »
