May bridges: warning, summons, fine… what do parents who do not send their children to school really risk?

This week, May 8 and Ascension Thursday, two public holidays, follow with a non-working bridge this Friday, May 10. Parents could be tempted not to send their children to school this Monday and Tuesday in order to have a week of vacation.

There are only two school days this week, this Monday May 6 and Tuesday May 7, 2024. For the rest of the week, school bags can remain put away. National Education has planned a “bridge”, not worked on Friday May 10 and Saturday May 11.

The temptation may have crept into the heads of some parents to make their children “skip” school at the start of the week, to improvise a week of vacation.

Tolerated?

Is this tolerated? The rules are specified in the Education Code. A certain number of legitimate absences are tolerated. Unsurprisingly, the improvised bridge is not one of them.

Students must attend classes scheduled in their timetable according to the Education Code which specifies, in article L131-8: “When a child temporarily misses class, those responsible must, without delay, inform the director of the educational establishment of the reasons for this absence” : illness, solemn family reunion (marriage, funeral), accident caused by transport.

Authorisation

Any other reason for absence may be examined and subject to authorization of absence by the National Education services. From four half-days of absence in a month, the management of the educational establishment in which the child is enrolled can convene a meeting with the educational team, underlines the servicepublic.fr website.

Fines and more…

The academic director of national education services (Dasen) can open a social investigation and refer the matter to the public prosecutor.

In this case, the fine to pay amounts to 135 euros, indicates the servicepublic.fr website. In the event of a repeat offense, it can rise to 750 euros. If Dasen can consider that these unjustified absences compromise your child’s education, you risk two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros.
