At almost two euros per liter, fuel prices have been soaring since the start of the year in France: we take stock

Bad news for motorists. Prices at the pump have returned to levels largely comparable to those of last fall.

It’s been almost two months since gas prices have been steadily increasing. So the Lead-Free 98 finds himself coming very close to the two eurosand the Lead-Free 95 also comes dangerously close with a price showing more than 1.93 per liter.

Particularly high prices when we know that at the same period in 2021the price per liter for the SP-98 did not exceed the 1.6 euros per liter and that of SP-95 for 1.4 euros.

THE superethanol E85 keep staying below 1 euro, the price of LPGc has remained rather constant since the start of 2024 and continues to be close to the bar of 1 euro.

Diesel on the decline

Exception to this general increase in prices, only one fuel has been decreasing since January 2024, it is diesel. Since April 12, 2024, the price per liter has increased of 1.79 has 1.75.

A downward trend in recent weeks, even if prices still remain far from those displayed at the pump over the same period in 2021, which oscillated around 1.3 euros per liter.

State aid in perspective?

While the government had put in place several measures such as a check for 100 euros to compensate for this radical increase in prices at the pump, it seems that this new period of increase is going under the radar.

Remember a year ago, in January 2023, the government announced a “fuel allowance” of 100 euros intended to help the most modest French motorists, in a context of continued rise in prices.

In total, no less than ten million tax households were able to benefit from this help from the State.

In November 2023, Bruno Le Maire specified that he wanted to condition the payment of this aid on a lasting “explosion” in fuel prices, to the tune of 1.95 or 1.96 euros per liter.

A trend similar to the one we are experiencing today, a harbinger of a release of aid in the weeks to come?
