Moselle gendarmes support bikers to resume the season safely

Like every year in spring, the Moselle gendarmes offer bikers the opportunity to get back on the saddle safely. A “trajectory” day is organized by the Moselle departmental Road Safety squadron on Saturday May 11. We talked about it with our guest in the Great Awakening.

What is the point of these days?

This day is very interesting for our fellow civilian motorcyclists. This allows you to come out of winter storage with the machines after a long break. We get back into good habits, we talk with our police. This first allows us to see the pilot’s preparation, how we equip ourselves, how we approach this return to driving, the preparation of the machine and getting back into habits with the environment. On the road, after driving a car, we must learn to drive with vehicles, with trucks, with the whole environment.

How will it unfold?

We welcome people. There is a theoretical part where we will teach them the way the gendarmes drive, that is to say what we will call the safety trajectory with the safety cushion. We do not replace the driving school, it is really information. We answer all the questions and once the theoretical part is well understood, we set off on a 100km ride where each person will find themselves in a driving situation in front with the gendarme behind for 5 minutes and then at the end, there will be a debrief where we will do a little analysis of what is going well, of what can be improved. The goal is that at the end of the day everyone has learned something.

Do motorcyclists cause more accidents proportionally than motorists?

They are not “at the origin”. They are much more exposed than motorists. On his motorcycle, he has no interior, in terms of protection, it’s individual. Compared with a car, it is certain that in the event of an impact, in the event of a collision, the damage is not the same.

Since April 1, technical inspections have been in place for motorcycles. You who control the standards of two-wheelers, is that a good thing?

The technical inspection is the guarantee of a motorcycle which is checked, which is well controlled, which works. It also allows us to check certain points where our youngest would tend to bias the system a little by tampering with the exhaust, “little young people’s hacks”. Beyond the technical inspection, what is really interesting for our motorcyclists is the equipment. Today, the law requires you to wear a helmet and gloves. The equipment must be boots, motorcycle pants, a motorcycle jacket, it’s important. Riding a motorcycle in flip-flop shorts is not prohibited, but it is very dangerous.
