The essential

  • Ten candidates are in the running for this presidential election, including one woman. Victory should be fought out between the two main ones, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno and Succès Masra. The first was proclaimed head of state by the army three years ago to succeed his father and the second, a former opponent, appointed Prime Minister five months ago.
  • Voting is scheduled on site from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • 8.2 million voters are registered to give their vote to one of the candidates or to the only woman in the running, Lydie Beassemda.
