Judicial investigation into the death of Pravin Kanakiah: the repayment of a loan taken out by the ex-civil servant calls into question

A loan of Rs 3.2 million, taken out by Pravin Kanakiah on April 29, 2019, was repaid in February 2021, at the request of his widow. This reimbursement raised questions during the judicial inquiry into his death, which was held this Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the Souillac court.

Pravin Kanakiah, aged 38, was a Procurement & Supply Officer at the Ministry of Finance. His body was recovered on December 11, 2020, in La-Roche-qui-pleure, in Gris-Gris.

During the hearing, Noomesh Mosaye, Litigation Officer at the State Bank of Mauritius, was summoned again. He explained that due to legal notice, he could not produce the document required by the Court, emphasizing that the loan had been repaid by the insurance company. According to him, this document is part of confidential exchanges between the bank and the insurance company.

The court ordered the witness to provide Pravin Kanakiah’s bank statements between January and October 2020. The magistrate and Mᵉ Damodarsingh Bissessur, Senior State Counsel, sought to understand the procedures and deadlines for repaying a loan. Noomesh Mosaye is due back in court on October 10, 2024 with additional answers.

As a reminder, three days after the death of Pravin Kanakiah, his widow requested the insurance company to reimburse the remaining amount of the loan. This sum, amounting to Rs 3,088,587.23, was settled on February 25, 2021.
