In her new book “What Carries Us”, the ecofeminist MP highlights the gap between the growing vision of the political offer, including on the left, and a society in the midst of a social and ecological shift which is evolving on work, sexism, racism and the perception of animals.

Could it be “nostalgia” that undermines French society and our democracy? Nostalgia for a fantasized image of the Thirty Glorious Years where growth and industry offered everyone a wonderful life made up of pavilions, concrete, cars and household robots? This is the hypothesis made by environmentalist MP Sandrine Rousseau in her latest work What carries us (Threshold) in which she underlines the gap which exists between the majority of political leaders, led by the new government, stuck in a dated croissantist and consumerist vision, and an increasingly large part of society ready for an “ecological and social”. The opportunity to take stock with her on the Prime Minister’s announcements, the failure of the left after its electoral victory, and the recent criticism of #MeToo.

From the dissolution of the National Assembly to Michel Barnier’s general policy speech, what is your view on this political sequence?

This is yet another coup of liberalism. I see there a fierce desire to continue the model based on growth when it no longer makes sense. Whatever it takes. Whatever the extent of the anger, of the democratic crisis, nothing must change. We still live in the myth of the Thirty Glorious Years, according to which nothing is possible apart from growth and productivity, and the individual is defined solely by his role as consumer.
