This weekend the 17th edition of the “Tous à l’opéra” operation is being organized. With one objective: to attract spectators to the theaters. Because lyrical art suffers from a lack of financial resources, and has been weighed down by inflation in recent months.

Faced with budgetary difficulties, opera houses are forced to set aside works, or even for some, to close their doors for a time. In an attempt to renew the opera audience, the “Tous à l’opéra” operation returns this weekend for a 17th edition. 60,000 people are expected.

Visits while listening to Verdi or even escape games at the Opéra Garnier in Paris to discover this historic monument. “All at the Opera” is a crucial meeting for Frédéric Pérouchine, director of the Réunion des Opéras de France. “It is obvious that the opera audience must constantly renew itself. We need our theaters to be full to sustain the opera’s economic model, which is a model weakened by cuts in subsidies,” explains – he.

Consequence of inflation

In 2023, the opera sector has seen fewer curtain raisers and more expensive shows due to inflation. However, the Ministry of Culture affirms that aid has not decreased. For Valérie Chevalier, director of the Montpellier Opera, we must still remain cautious and make concessions. “For example, we decided to postpone ‘La Force du destin’, which is a great Italian opera, and we transformed it into a gala concert. Basically, an opera production costs around 600,000 euros. On a concert of gala, we will be between 150 and 200,000 euros, we are in tight flow,” she worries.

A tense flow despite the patronage and aid of the metropolis of Montpellier. The solution remains to include a new audience in its ranks.
