Paris: investigation opened after the death of a resident of the largest public nursing home in the capital

This Friday, May 3, an investigation was opened after the death of a woman in the largest public nursing home in Paris.

This aims to shed light on the “possible liability” of this health establishment.

The Paris public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation this Friday, May 3, in order to clarify “possible liability” of the largest public nursing home in Paris regarding the death of one of its residents. Aged 76, she had been violently attacked, as reported by AFP.

The investigation, entrusted to the police station of the 20th arrondissement of Paris, was opened following a complaint against X, filed on April 22 by the sons of the deceased. This targets the counts of involuntary manslaughter, endangering the lives of others and failure to assist a person in danger. Note that another survey in “search for causes of death” is underway at the 2nd district of the Parisian judicial police.

It is unthinkable to entrust your loved one to such an establishment and find them dead.

Master Fabien Arakelian

“I really hope that justice will take stock of this case. It is unthinkable to entrust your loved one to such an establishment and find them dead,” declared the family’s lawyer, Maître Fabien Arakelian. According to the complaint revealed by The worldof which AFP was aware, this woman suffered from schizophrenic disorders and “particularly vulnerable”. She was attacked by another patient on January 1, 2024 in the Alquier-Debrousse nursing home, located in the 20th arrondissement of the capital.

The woman was found by a cleaning agent. She was then held down by a man “sitting on his head” and covered in scratches. After this attack, the victim’s condition deteriorated. She refused “to eat, take medication, get up and communicate verbally”. However, the nursing home does not have her consulted by “no doctor”, his sons are indignant. Finally hospitalized on January 3, doctors discovered a “large subdural hematoma, with cerebral involvement”. It was a few days later, on January 12, that the woman died.

The complaint therefore denounces a “catastrophic care” of the nursing home, but also its “lack of transparency”, accusing the establishment of not having mentioned the assault at the time of hospitalization. They also denounce “lacking answers” from the nursing home to their questions after the death of the victim. Following the death of the nursing home resident, her sons discovered that their mother had already been attacked by the same patient in December. However, the establishment did not react, or even take “necessary precautions” to his safety, according to them.
