The legal representatives of the families of the pilgrims who died during the tragedy that occurred in Mare-Longue during the Maha Shivratree celebrations in February 2023 will soon serve 14 formal notices to the Central Electricity Board (CEB). Supported by around fifteen lawyers, including Mes Kaviraj Bhokoree, Germain Wong, Sharvan Tarachand, Tisha Shamloll, Arun Binda and Yousuf Jan Mohamed, these Albion families held a press conference in PortLouis last Wednesday.

There would have been several failures of the CEB, such as the fact that when a road is widened, the pylons located there must be moved and that this was not the case before this tragedy. The families and their lawyers believe that the CEB should recognize its wrongdoing and adequately compensate the victims, some of whom had both legs amputated and burns on a large part of their body, as well as the relatives of Roshan Doorjeean, who was going to celebrate his 20th birthday, and Parmeshwar Dookeeya, 22 years old, the two young people died.

Me Tarachand wanted to clarify one of the reasons for the CEB’s guilt by evoking articles 1382 and 1384 of the Civil Code: “We are only responsible for the damage caused by us. We are also responsible for damage caused under our control and responsibility.»

The Ministry of Health should promptly submit the full medical reports of the affected patients for the purposes of justice. They ask the government to look into this matter before the next general elections and before the dissolution of the National Assembly out of respect for the families.

As a reminder, the *kanwar *that the members of the Tishuldhari Shiv Temple d’Albion, caught fire on February 16, 2023 while the group was on its way to Grand-Bassin. This tragedy left two dead and around twenty seriously injured. According to the authorities’ version, the kanwar caught fire after hitting a CEB high voltage cable.
