It was finally time, Tuesday morning, to hear the defendant in this corruption procedure linked to oil contracts concluded by the Geneva company Gunvor in Congo. Presumed innocent, G. is a 47-year-old Frenchman who manages a guest house in the south-west of France, far from the adrenaline that oil trading provides. The firm has already been convicted, as has a trader, P., as well as several intermediaries.
Jean-Luc Bacher, President of the Court at the Federal Criminal Court of Bellinzona, begins by informing G. that he risks up to five years in prison for the corruption, which occurred between 2010 and 2011, and three years for an attempt, in 2014. Monday was devoted to the hearing of the repentant witness, P., who explained the corruptive mechanism in force within Gunvor, deemed “systemic” by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Confederation. We also discussed a video, shot without G.’s knowledge, in which he proposes, according to the prosecution, a “corruptive pact” in a Parisian restaurant. This is the attempt, and on this subject, G. does not speak.
