During a recent campaign speech, Donald Trump suggested that police be given a “very violent day” to restore order in the country. A proposal that is reminiscent of the horror film “American Nightmare” according to some Internet users.
When Hollywood inspires politics. In the midst of the presidential campaign, Donald Trump was the target of a flood of criticism after his speech in the town of Erie, Pennsylvania, during which he suggested that a “very violent day” be given to the forces of order in order to eradicate crime. “Crime is reaching unprecedented levels, it’s latent. It’s increasing. We have to let the police do their job, and if they have to do it in a very violent way,” he said, before losing his train of thought.
A little later, the former American president returned to the same theme. “The liberal left wants to destroy the police, and our country. If we had a day, a violent day, nasty with pharmacies (sic) for example,” he continued, before asking the public what they would think of such a day, later evoking the possibility that it only lasts an hour.
Desire for violence
Many Internet users were quick to draw a parallel with the horrific film saga “American Nightmare” (The Purge, in original version) – which has five films in total, with a sixth in development – in which the American government authorizes, day a year, that any crime be committed, including murder, in order to allow the population to purge their desire for violence.
“Donald Trump suggests a Hollywood-style purge, authorizing just for a day or an hour ‘violent’ behavior to get rid of drug dealers. When someone tells you who they are, believe them,” wrote one user on X.
“I go away for a few hours only to come back and find Donald Trump promoting a purge in a very serious way. It’s impossible to invent something like that,” adds another.
