Greenhouse gases fell slightly in 2022, according to the Planning Bureau

In 2022, industrial sectors represented 35% of total greenhouse gas emissions. The share of households reached 24%, while the share of the energy sector represented 13%.

Other gases were also down in 2022. Acidifying gases fell by 3%. This index measures the negative consequences of acidification, due to emissions, on the development of plants, animals, groundwater and soil quality.

Substances such as nitrogen oxides (NOx, mainly generated by combustion engines and thermal power plants) – which cause the formation of ozone in the lower layers of the atmosphere and can cause significant health risks – also decreased slightly. Industrial sectors occupy the largest share (31% in 2022), even if it has declined in recent years. The share of households (26%) and the share of agriculture (25%) are lower, details the Planning Office.

Finally, emissions of fine particles have also decreased (-6% for ultrafine particles compared to 2021 and -5% for fine particles in general).
