Dn the Antwerp district of Ekeren, a De Lijn company bus crashed into the facade of a café and a Chinese restaurant during the night from Sunday to Monday. A fire broke out following the accident. Three people, including the bus driver and a paramedic, were taken to hospital.
The accident occurred shortly after midnight. “The bus driver veered out of his lane and crashed into a cafe and Chinese restaurant across the street. A gas line was hit, causing the bus to catch fire. The fire then spread to the restaurant,” said police spokesperson Wouter Bruyns.
It is likely that the driver felt unwell. He was taken to hospital, as was a local resident who came to help and a paramedic who inhaled too much smoke. The bus was no longer carrying passengers.
