The death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer on Friday, during the Worlds in Zurich, is “a tragedy” which should encourage the peloton to be “more careful”, declared the new world champion Tadej Pogacar on Sunday evening.

“It is a tragedy, first of all obviously for his family and loved ones, for the Swiss team, but also for the entire cycling community”underlined the Slovenian at a press conference. “It’s very difficult. This weekend, everyone ran thinking of her”he added.

“It’s hard to know what should change. Cycling is a dangerous sport and has become even more so in recent years. It’s happened too often.”he developed. “We must be more careful on the road, take care of each other when we ride in a peloton, pay attention to others, respect each other. We’re just human beings and we don’t want anything bad to happen to anyone.”.

Muriel Furrer, 18, died on Friday, September 27, the day after a fall in the junior race held in pouring rain, near where she lived. She was airlifted to the hospital with “severe head trauma”. The circumstances of the accident remain unclear and an investigation is underway, said the International Cycling Union (UCI).
