May 1st is International Workers’ Solidarity Day. This is an important moment to reaffirm the universality and indivisibility of rights and in particular the importance of economic and social rights.
Every year, they are violated more and more and it is the most vulnerable people who pay the high price. The list of attacks is increasingly long: Labor code, unemployment benefits, pensions, health, housing, education, rights of foreigners….
And the response to the protests boils down to ever more repression, with increasingly serious attacks on freedoms and particularly freedom of expression, as evidenced by the prosecutions against hundreds of trade union, association and political activists.
Nothing seems to resist the machine to damage the State set up by the President of the Republic.
Elected to block the extreme right, he makes the bed a little more every day. However, it is on this rise in social and territorial inequalities that they feed, even though they have no solution to propose except to fuel hatred and designate scapegoats. We will not let them unduly appropriate the social struggles that they have never supported, nor their celebration like this May 1st.
More than ever, the LDH believes that it is with the coming together of progressive forces that alternatives can be built. This is why, like every year, it calls for mobilization this May 1 alongside trade union organizations and the social movement throughout France to defend rights, freedoms, the rule of law and, more broadly, democracy.
