We imagine sleepless nights, long hours tossing and turning without Morpheus finally conceding to offer us his arms. But chronic insomnia, a disorder affecting around 10% of the population, is – in reality – more sneaky than we think.

“It is very common to associate insomnia with not sleeping at night,” describes Professor Christoph Nissen, director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG). However, it is not the case. Large meta-analyses, which compared people who sleep well and others affected by chronic insomnia, show that the difference in sleep duration is only 20 minutes on average, while the affected participants’ feelings are several hours. Sleep is a very complex process, and some unrealistic expectations about it can contribute to the feeling of an unrestorative night. It is also possible that certain waking activities during sleep are not measurable with current devices.
