Exposure of young people to screens: the effective solution of a high school in Seine-Saint-Denis
Exposure of young people to screens: the effective solution of a high school in Seine-Saint-Denis
(France 2)

How can we teach younger generations to detach themselves from their phones? In Seine-Saint-Denis, two teachers from a high school in Épinay-sur-Seine have put in place strict rules. Depending on the hours they spend in front of their screens daily, they must spend extra time in high school.

The ritual is the same every week when they arrive at sports class. Students in second grade at the Épinay-sur-Seine high school (Seine-Saint-Denis) communicate to their teacher the time they spend on average per day in front of screens and place their cell phones in a box for the duration of the lesson . To make their students responsible, two teachers have put in place strict rules. Between 4 and 6 hours of telephone time per day, adolescents must come an extra hour to high school for a sports activity or academic support. Between 6 and 8 a.m., they have to come for two more hours. Beyond 8 hours of screen time per day, students get 3 additional hours.

The initiative is rather well accepted by young high school students. “It helps me, because on my own, I wouldn’t have done it”, says a student. In seven months, their screen consumption has gone from 7.5 hours per day on average to less than 5 hours today. A device that improves the attitude and grades of high school students.
