Fuel at cost price: Leclerc attacks the government

Asked about the possible return of fuel at cost price, Leclerc’s boss attacks the government. Find out his answer.

If you regularly have to fill up with fuel, you have probably noticed that it is becoming more and more expensive.

When will fuel return at cost?

And for good reason, both gasoline and diesel are now close to the two euro mark, and this should continue over the coming months. The cause is inflation, abusive taxation but also the increase in demand as well as the drop in oil production. Not to mention the various geo-political conflicts all over the world. In addition, the government does not want to bring back the long-awaited 100 euro fuel check that it had promised last year. At the same time, distributors have all stopped their promotional offers, particularly fuel at cost price. And the latter should not come back right away, as indicated Michel-Edouard Leclerc, the famous entrepreneur at the head of the eponymous hypermarkets. Questioned by Apolline de Malherbe, the latter explains that he is not yet able to offer this operation again in his brand. And he gives the reason bluntly during this interview.

A small attack on the government on fuel

The businessman indeed indicates that “We were a bit fooled last year, when we achieved the long-term fuel at cost with Carrefour. The government then promised us efforts to improve our supplies by summoning refiners in particular. When we see the profits made by the refiners with exceptional profits, we would have liked to share the effort. To redo a fuel operation at cost price we need a commitment from the public authorities to obtain cheap resupply.” He continues by saying that “I am in favor of the cost price of fuel but, you know, today we are not far from it in our gas stations. Moreover, those who are pushing down fuel prices in France are Leclerc, Système U and Intermarché.” According to him, “during these operations, sales increase by 20%. We must therefore be able to restock all our tanks very quickly.”

The situation is therefore very unclear at the moment regarding the return of this operation…
