“Vampire lift”: the term means nothing to you? Popularized by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, the practice involves extracting blood from a part of the body and injecting it into the face in the hope of stimulating new, rejuvenated skin cells. But this practice can turn out to be relatively dangerous if it is not supervised by a real aesthetic doctor. Indeed, some SPAs completely illegally offer this treatment on their menu and the consequences can be dramatic.

In a spa in Albuquerque, United States, some treatments turned into a nightmare. Five people, as well as the partner of one of them, contracted HIV following a vampire lift before 2018, reports the Washington Post. These are the first known cases of HIV transmitted by cosmetic injection.

Deplorable hygienic conditions

In this spa, the hygiene conditions raised questions. Disposable syringes were reused while cosmetic products were kept in a refrigerator next to food. There was also no steam sterilizer on site, a tool that allows the equipment used for injections to be cleaned and sterilized.

It took several years for the victims to realize that they were carrying HIV. The spa closed its doors in 2018, when the investigation by health authorities began. Its former owner is currently serving a three and a half year prison sentence.
