The Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka and the Dane Holger Rune will face each other on Saturday morning for a place in the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo.

It is very difficult to understand what has been happening at Holger Rune for a year now. In the world top 10 in the summer of 2023, the Dane has since suffered from stability in his game, causing more than mixed results in recent months. Eighth finalist at Wimbledon and semi-finalist at the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, the Scandinavian hoped to have found the right settings. But his exit in the first round of the US Open served as a reminder of Holger Rune’s fragility. Present last week at the Hangzhou tournament, the 14th player in the world bit the dust as soon as he entered the fray against the modest Japanese Yasutaka Uchiyama. Winner of the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in the first round yesterday, Holger Rune now hopes to be able to stabilize his game.

His opponent for a place in the quarter-finals will be Yoshihito Nishioka. The Japanese is a solid player on hard court, having won the Atlanta tournament last July. 59th in the ATP, the Japanese tennis player however had difficulty confirming, with early eliminations in Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open. Coming out in the second round last week in Hangzhou, Yoshihito Nishioka put in a great performance during the first round by defeating Félix Auger-Aliassime, 21st player in the world. A performance of choice for the Japanese who would now see himself paying for the scalp of the Dane in front of his audience.
