It has been a very long time since former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal officially submitted his resignation to Emmanuel Macron on July 16, 2024. From now on, it is Michel Barnier who is in charge of this new government whose team was presented to the French this Saturday, September 21, 2024.

This Friday, two new faces were integrated into the government team. Jean-Louis Thiériot (to the Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans) and Charlotte Parmentier-Lecocq (in charge of People with Disabilities). This brings the total number of ministers to 41.

Member of the North

Born in Guadeloupe, the new delegate minister grew up in the North. She is “an early supporter” of Emmanuel Macron, for whom she also gave her time during the 2017 campaign.

Invested the same year, in the 6e Northern constituency, she won the election against Thierry Lazaro, who nevertheless seemed “unbeatable”, according to the Voice of the North at the time. Reinvested in 2022, she largely won her duel against candidate Nupes, with more than 63% of the votes. Ditto in 2024, facing the Union of the far right, after the Republican withdrawal of the New Popular Front candidate.

At the same time, the native of Pointe-à-Pitre was elected departmental councilor for the North. A position she still held at the time of her appointment.

During her three mandates at the Bourbon Palace, Charlotte Parmentier-Lecocq was a member of the Social Affairs Commission and even became its president in September 2023, when the president at the time, Fadila Khattabi was appointed Minister Delegate in charge of People disabled by Elisabeth Borne.

Controversy over the absence of a minister responsible for disability

The same one who was surprised by the absence of a minister responsible for disability on X (tweet since deleted), when the Barnier government was announced.

“It’s a real incomprehension,” commented Pascale Ribes, president of the APF handicap to France info, this Tuesday, September 24, 2024. “It’s as if the 12 million people with disabilities completely disappeared from the public policies, this is a serious political error.”

Given the scale that this controversy was beginning to take, Michel Barnier and the executive quickly reacted and rectified the situation.
