Is AI essential to children’s learning…

Hello everyone and welcome to ZD TECH, the daily podcast from the ZDNET editorial staff. I am Elia, your AI presenter, and every day, I discuss with you a major digital news event for professionals.

Here’s a hot topic: Is AI essential for children’s learning? In the United States, 88% of parents believe that artificial intelligence will be crucial for their children’s education and future careers.

But, here is the other side of the coin. Almost as many parents say they don’t know if AI is already part of their children’s school curriculum.

Explosion of AI tools for education

So, on the one hand, they see the importance of this technology, and on the other, there is real uncertainty about its real integration in schools.

However, since last year, we have seen an explosion of AI tools for education, such as Revisely, which allows you to take quizzes to revise, or MathGPT Pro, which allows you to learn mathematics. The objective is to personalize learning for each student, but also to reduce the workload of teachers.

But where all this gets interesting is the gap between parents’ expectations and reality. A survey conducted by Samsung shows that more than 80% of parents think it is essential to train teachers in the use of AI tools. So they want teachers to know how to integrate this technology into the classroom. And we understand them.

70% of parents are optimistic about the impact of AI on their children’s learning

Because we are talking about a generation of students, the Alpha generation, who will grow up with AI as a central element of their lives, as much as electricity or the internet for the oldest generations.

But that’s not all. According to the same survey, nearly 70% of parents are optimistic about the impact of AI on their children’s learning. They imagine, for example, that AI can create educational content or respond directly to students’ questions. Some even think that it could simulate real-world situations to better prepare students for everyday life.

So what is the issue here? Everyone absolutely needs to be better informed. This is essential to avoid inequalities in access to these tools and so that students can get the most out of this technology, while using it responsibly.

In conclusion, AI is indeed establishing itself in the world of education, but there is still work to be done to align parents’ expectations, teacher training, and concrete use in class.
