The 18-year-old Swiss fell violently during the junior race at the World Championships in Zurich on Thursday morning. She is in very critical condition.

Muriel Furrer fell in a still unexplained way, explain the organizers, Swiss Cycling and the International Cycling Union in a press release. The young athlete was taken by helicopter to hospital. “She suffers from a serious head injury and is in a very critical situation,” the statement said.
“Extremely concerned by the situation, the UCI, the Swiss Federation and the Zurich 2024 Local Organizing Committee are closely monitoring developments and will communicate as soon as possible,” the missive continued. At present, there are no proven facts regarding the course of the accident. Investigations by the competent authorities are ongoing.”
The versatile Swiss was participating in the girls’ under-18 race at the World Championships in Zurich when she suffered this major injury. She took 44th place in the time trial at the start of the week. The athlete from VC Meilen, a town on the Zurich “Gold Coast”, where the clock for these World Championships was running, also, notably, finished 2nd in the Swiss Championships.
Swiss Cycling has notably canceled all media activities until further notice.
